Does Car Insurance Cover Catalytic Converter Theft?

If your catalytic converter gets stolen, you may be wondering if it’s covered by your vehicle insurance and how to make a claim for it. This post tells you what you need to know before you make a claim and how to ensure the repairs are done properly.

How can I tell if my catalytic converter has been stolen?

You won’t be able to tell if your catalytic converter has been stolen just by looking at your vehicle, but once you start it, you will definitely notice that something isn’t right. There are tell-tale signs that your catalytic converter has been stolen, and your vehicle may display one or several of these signs:

  • Your vehicle is louder than usual
  • You notice an abnormal smell
  • The check engine light is on
  • Uneven acceleration and/or idling
  • Missing parts of the exhaust system

Is catalytic converter theft covered by insurance?

The short answer is typically yes, provided you have full coverage or comprehensive coverage of your vehicle. Your comprehensive deductible will apply, and your insurance company may either want to inspect the vehicle to asses the damage or ask for supporting materials such as a police report.

Unfortunately, for those without full coverage or comprehensive coverage, theft will not be covered by insurance. Liability-only insurance policies do not cover any type of vandalism or theft, or damage related to catalytic converter removal.

To confirm what kind of coverage you have, call your insurance provider. It’s also worth confirming your coverage with your current provider to make sure they cover catalytic converter theft because despite its name, comprehensive insurance does not actually cover everything.

You will also need to find out what your deductible is. This is the portion you pay before your vehicle insurance kicks in. If your deductible is more than the cost of repair, you may not be able to file a claim as insurance only covers damage above your deductible amount.

How do I inform my insurance company that my catalytic converter was stolen?

Suspect your catalytic converter has been stolen? If you are not sure or not able to confirm yourself, the first step is to get confirmation from a mechanic. They can easily tell if your catalytic has been stolen by looking underneath the vehicle to see if it’s missing. Driving a short distance without a catalytic converter shouldn’t hurt the vehicle, but to avoid long-term damage to your vehicle and to keep your engine running optimally, the catalytic converter will need to be replaced.

Once you have confirmed that your catalytic converter has been stolen, the next step is to call your local police station and report the theft over the phone. This serves two purposes - the insurance company may request a copy of the report number to allow them to process the claim, and it also helps police compile information about which areas are being targeted for catalytic converter theft. This ultimately leads to a great chance of catalytic converter thieves being caught.

Once the police have been notified, it’s time to call your insurance provider and start the process of making an insurance claim. You can do this by calling your insurance company, letting them know that your catalytic converter has been stolen and that you wish to begin the claim process.

Your insurer may email you some forms to fill out or send you a link to complete online. They may also request some information from you such as your insurance policy number, your date of birth, address or other identifying information.

Depending on the situation and your insurer, you may be asked to get an estimated cost of repair from one or several mechanics. Sometimes, the insurer will suggest a shop or they may leave it up to you. The estimate will need to be approved by your insurer before repair work can begin.

Once your claim has been approved and the repair work has been completed, the insurer will settle your claim. This will either be done by reimbursing you for the cost of repair, or your insurer may pay the repair shop directly. The time this takes varies between different insurers and can anywhere between a couple of hours to a few months.

What happens if I can’t drive my vehicle?

It’s generally ok to drive a car without a catalytic converter for a short distance, but thieves generally aren’t too careful when they’re sawing off parts and may have caused additional damage to your vehicle, rendering it un-driveable.

If you need a tow and have comprehensive coverage, your insurer will likely cover the cost of getting your vehicle towed to the repair shop – this is something you should confirm with your insurer first.

Depending on how long your car will take to repair, your insurer may be able to arrange a rental vehicle. Replacing a catalytic converter isn’t a time-consuming job, but the wait time depends on how readily parts are available for your particular vehicle. 

Can I choose where my car gets repaired?

Replacing a catalytic converter is not a time consuming nor difficult job so most repair shops will either do the work themselves to subcontract the work out to their preferred exhaust specialist. But if you have a regular mechanic that works on your car, you may be wondering if your insurance company will allow them to carry out the repair.

The answer is it depends on your insurance provider and where you live. Some providers may insist you take it to a repair shop of their choice. This is because they will have negotiated a contract with a certain repair to control the labor rate, essentially making the cost of repair cheaper to them.

What can I do if my catalytic converter theft insurance claim gets denied?

A car insurance claim can be denied for any number of reasons. When an insurance claim is denied, your provider will typically send out a letter explaining the factors that led to their decision. If you don’t agree with your insurer providers decision, you have several options available.

  1. Gather evidence – This can include police reports, any eyewitness information, photographs or other supporting evidence. Be sure to send photocopies with your resubmitted claim and not the originals.
  2. Write an appeal letter – The letter should outline why you disagree with your insurance providers' decision. Provide as much detail as possible, referencing your insurance policy where appropriate.
  3. Contact your state's insurance commissioner – Most states will have a special unit to deal with issues such as unfairly denied insurance claims, or a mediation program that will help policyholders negotiate a disputed claim with their insurance provider. 

Can the insurance company total my vehicle?

Yes, in some cases where the cost of repairs is greater than the value of the vehicle, an insurance company may just total (or write-off) your vehicle. If your vehicle has had multiple replacements of catalytic converters or is an older vehicle, your insurance may not fix it and opt to give you the monetary value of the car instead. It is therefore important for people to do what they can to prevent theft of their catalytic converters.

How can I prevent catalytic converter theft?

You agree that any legal action brought against Miller Cat Corp. shall be governed by the laws of the state of California without regard to its conflict of law principles. You agree that the sole jurisdiction and venue for any litigation arising from your use of Miller Cat Corp., or orders made on Miller Cat Corp., shall be held in a federal or state court located in Santa Clara County in the State of California.


Any dispute arising from this contractual relationship shall be governed by California law, and shall be decided solely and exclusively by State courts located in California. Any party who unsuccessfully challenges the enforceability of this forum selection clause shall reimburse Miller Cat Corp for its attorney's fees.


Miller Cat Corp shall have the right to collect from the other party its reasonable costs and necessary disbursements and attorneys' fees incurred in enforcing this Agreement. "Costs" include, but are not limited to, filing fees, fees for serving the summons, complaint, and other court papers, fees to pay a court reporter to transcribe depositions (pretrial interviews of witnesses) and in-court testimony, and, if a jury is involved, to pay the daily stipend of jurors. Costs to photocopy court papers and exhibits may also be included.


This agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties. No waiver, consent, modification or change of terms of this agreement shall bind either party unless in writing and signed by both parties. Such waiver, consent, modification or change, if made, shall be effective only in the specific instance and for the specific purpose given. There are no understandings, agreements, or representations, oral or written, not specified herein regarding this agreement. The undersigned customer hereby acknowledges that he/she has read this agreement, understands it, and agrees to be bound by its terms and conditions.


The failure of Miller Cat Corp to exercise or enforce any right or provision of this Agreement shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. If any provision of the Agreement is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, the parties nevertheless agree that the court should endeavor to give effect to the parties' intentions as reflected in the provision, and the other provisions of the Agreement shall remain in full force and effect. Any ambiguities in this Agreement shall not be strictly construed against the drafter of the language concerned, but instead shall be resolved by applying the most reasonable interpretation under the circumstances, giving full consideration to the intent of the parties at the time of contracting.


Unless your order will be shipping LTL freight, tracking information should be sent to your email address (if provided) as soon as orders are fulfilled during business operation hours. Please note that the tracking numbers will not become active until the shipment leaves our facility. We strive to get all orders pulled, packed, and shipped quickly and accurately. Miller Cat Corp. cannot guarantee that your order will be shipped the day on which it is placed. We will make every attempt to ship your order within two (2) business days or earlier for orders that are not bulk orders, which may take longer to fulfill. In order to avoid delays, your order may be shipped in multiple shipments or combined shipments at our discretion. We will attempt to contact you within 24 hours M-F if any of the items you order are on back-order with an estimated date when we can ship the item.
LOST OR STOLEN PACKAGES - *We do not offer refunds for lost or stolen packages. We only offer replacements, which are contingent upon investigation by the responsible carrier. Replacements are not returnable or refundable.


You cannot cancel an order after it ships. If you refuse any package from Miller Cat Corp or are not available to receive a package within the three delivery attempts FedEx or USPS makes you are responsible for shipping charges for the package coming back to Miller Cat Corp.


All items MUST be returned within 30 days in exactly the same condition that they were received. This also applies to any faulty or incorrect part that Miller Cat Corp may have shipped in error. Returned items must be undamaged and unmodified. PLEASE check all parts before installation. Parts CANNOT be returned FOR ANY REASON after installation, modification, or painting.


To receive Pre-Authorization:

1. Go to to begin your return.
2. Read through the terms and conditions for returns and click the button on the bottom of the page to agree to the terms and conditions and start your return process.
3. Provide your order number and zip code to look up your order. Please indicate why you are returning your product. You will be allowed to purchase cheaper shipping rates to our location and be given an RMA number.
4. After we receive your return, we will inspect the product in two to three business days. After inspection, you will be issued a refund minus any applicable shipping and restocking fees from your refund. Please allow 5-7 business days for your refund to show on your credit card after we submit the refund.
The RMA number, your name, and address MUST be included on and in the box in which your return is shipped. In addition to the RMA#, name and address inside of the box, also include a daytime phone number and the reason for the return. The RMA# will be required to facilitate your refund.

If you follow these instructions and do not receive an RMA#, contact: Your return WILL NOT be processed if there is no RMA# associated with the order and it is not included with the return.
FEES - All returns NOT facilitated by an error by Miller Cat Corp are subject to a restocking fee of up to 20% based on the condition of the return and cost of the return shipping.


Securely pack the item that you are returning.* Inside of the box be sure to include your name, address, daytime phone number, the reason for the return, and the RMA #. Please choose a shipping method with a tracking number to ensure your package arrives. Miller Cat Corp IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR RETURN SHIPPING but does offer customers to use our discounted rates to send shipments back to us. The customer is responsible for the cost of returns unless the error was made by us.
